Scientific studies show that the subconscious makes up over 80% of your mind and controls 96-98% of your perceptions and behaviors. One of the most important functions of the subconscious is to protect you from future danger based on your learned
memories of the past. When you have an emotionally painful experience, the fight or flight survival response is immediately
activated. In order to protect you from feeling the same emotional pain in the future, your subconscious stores everything
that occurred while this incident took place. It is like a file folder is created for the event and all emotional and sensory
information gets stored in that emotional memory file. Many people know that when the negative event occurs, whatever was happening in your external world, including sounds, colors, and relationship dynamics, get stored in these emotional memory files. These become triggers that can automatically launch you into protective behaviors. But we have discovered a profound new truth: Whatever you were feeling when the incident occurred (like joy, creativity, power, or that you were moving forward, getting what you wanted, being successful) is also put in the emotional file and forever linked to the negative emotions of the painful event. Your subconscious mind now believes those positive feelings are dangerous to you and your survival. From then on, your subconscious mind actively tries to protect you by blocking your joy, power, etc., so you will not experience the same emotional pain in the future. Your subconscious mind is constantly cross-checking everything that happens in your daily life against these emotional memory files. If something occurs in the present that is similar to what your subconscious has linked to a past emotionally painful experience, your conscious intentions and desires will automatically be overridden as your subconscious protects you from this perceived danger. Here is a simple example of how this works: Imagine you are five years old and you draw on the walls of your bedroom while feeling joyful, confident, and relaxed. Your mom sees what you are doing and yells at you, which has you feel rejected and unloved. Consciously, you learn to not draw on the walls. Simultaneously, you subconsciously learn that when you are joyful, relaxed, and confident you will get rejected and feel unloved. Your subconscious creates an emotional memory file that stores “being joyful, relaxed, and confident” with “feeling rejected and unloved.” Since your subconscious is designed to protect you from future emotionally painful experiences, it now has a new job: in order to prevent you from being made wrong and rejected, it must keep you from feeling joyful, relaxed, and confident. This belief is forever stored in your emotional memory files, and now 80% of your mind is committed to holding you back from what you consciously want. How does this belief affect you now? Perhaps you would love to create a successful writing career, be in a great relationship, take care of your body in a healthy way, or reduce your stress levels. If any of these changes would have you feel joyful, confident, or relaxed, your subconscious mind will try to block you from achieving these goals. The underlying resistance may manifest in many ways. You may feel afraid, resigned, insecure, or distracted. Perhaps you blame yourself for procrastinating or self-sabotage. You also may be taking actions to move forward, but obstacles keep getting in your way. Even if you focus on the positive, if you are not subconsciously aligned with what you consciously want, your subconscious will keep trying to protect you from your positive focus and affirmations. It is like having one foot on the gas and the other on the brake. The subconscious is the primitive emotional part of the brain; it does not know real from imagined, right from wrong, and it can not be reasoned with or talked out of its belief structures. These automatic survival responses have evolved over millions of years and they activate immediately and are outside the control of the conscious mind. Your subconscious either goes towards something if it feels safe or goes in the opposite direction it if it is associated with emotional pain. As additional emotionally painful events happen in your life, your subconscious creates new limiting beliefs and you end up playing fewer and fewer keys on your keyboard, which limits the music you can make in your life. Here’s the good news: There is a way to completely dissolve these patterns!
